Anyone else experiencing problems with BBC.co.uk/.com?

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Is is just me or is the BBC website really slow? Go on, try it… by clicking on that link…. or this one.

Maybe they’ve put it on the slow route to Chile or perhaps it is competing for bandwidth with the Cricket World Cup (no mention of the Scotland-Australia score yesterday), but the site will not load in any of our browsers today. I’ve reverted to reading my favourite newspaper, The Guardian online, Christian Today news, Top Gear magazine and Land Rover International….

Now, about the cricket (Dave)…. Australia weren’t too hot, and the rain didn’t save Scotland from a defeat. 203 runs short of the Aussies and all out was rather disappointing, but generally, their play wasn’t. Indeed, they fielded very well. Lets hope they learn how to bat before they face South Africa or Holland (although they might not need to worry about the latter Linde!).

Some encouraging news and prayer points

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

If you have been praying for us, thank you. We had heard lots of good news recently, things that continue to deserve our and your prayers!

  • Congratulations to Ryan and Morag Renfro, who have announced that they are expecting a baby in August! Pray for them as they prepare for their first family member!
  • Congratulations also to Paul and Joyce Jeffers, our friends in Antofagasta, Chile, who are expecting another child in April! Pray for them, specifically, for comfort and assurance as they prepare to have a baby in the Chilean medical system, for clear communication (in english or spanish) and enough english speaking doctors. Also, for eyesight for their second baby- Gabriel, their son has endured several operations at a young age to restore his sight. Praise the Lord for His help as they sort out passports/identity for their new baby. Pray that Paul would have time to do the paperwork in addition to his job.
  • Praise God for helping our friend Chris Reilly to purchase a house in Edinburgh. Also, for God’s will to be done in Chris’ plans to visit Chile later this year. And for his application to work with the Foreign & Commonwealth office.
  • Rachel has her schedule until June and has only two short shifts and much more time in Santiago. Thank you ESO! Pray that this time together in Santiago would be a time of growth for both of us and for recuperation for Rachel. We have several weekends away planned. Pray that these would offer enough rest and relaxation. Prayers would be appreciated for Cedric, a collegue of Rachel’s who has damaged his knee and can’t work- this may impact on Rachel’s schedule.
  • We have welcomed several new people at our church- an unusual time of year for newcomers, but an answer to prayer after some good friends returned earlier this year! These include people who have never heard of Jesus and the message of good news we, as Christians, have to share. Praise the Lord for these opportunities to share with incoming gringos and gringas! Pray for our witness here and for more opportunities to serve in Chile.
  • Pray for our friends Dave Gordge and Jemima, in Australia. We give thanks to God for providing Jemima with a job in Canberra, in occupational therapy- her “ideal field” and also in the same city as Dave! Pray for them as they prepare to be married in September and find accommodation. Also for Dave who is on a whistlestop 2 week work trip.
  • Pray for our friends James and Penelope- in particular, as James battles depression and as Penelope applies for jobs in Santiago, so that they can be free from parental interference and financial dependency.
  • For God’s continued love and grace to us here in Chile, for His work to humble us and to depend more on him for strength, guidance and inspiration to share His glory. Pray for our time with two friends, Carey and Naomi, this weekend, and for our youth group camping trip next weekend.
  • For Mel & Cam

    Saturday, February 10th, 2007

I discovered a version of the U2 song, One, last week, featuring Mary J Blige and every time i hear it, I think of Mel & Cameron, friends we made in Chile last year during their two year round-the-globe tour. They’ve now returned to their native Australia. They used this U2 song at their wedding. But this is a really incredible version of that song, with free flowing vocals and a more urgent pace.

For those who don’t know about it, the Make Poverty History campaign (culminating in 2005 and the G8 Summit at Gleneagles) has been re-branded as the ONE campaign. Fronted by Bono and other stars (although I note the absence of Bob Geldof who has become rather outspoken), the new website is really great. I particularly liked the rolling quotes at the bottom. This one in particular:

“Poverty is like punishment for a crime you didn’t commit.” - Eli Khamarov

So this link is for you, Mel & Cam (and anyone else interested)!

    Congratulations due about now…

To Michael and Veronica Hantke-Torres, who are expecting a baby this week!

Hope all goes well! We’ll be thinking of you both in our prayers!

    Poor sales of talking rabbits…

    Friday, October 27th, 2006

    I wonder why?!!

Actually… this is why… complaints about monthly expenses for additional services, wifi reading services, weather and news service charges, short battery life, ears breaking (literally “breaking news” then!), exploitation of chinese workers for an object costing £80 ($150) and, get this… Lack of Fur!

I want to laugh at the kid who bought one (or pursuaded his/her parent to buy one) only to find it had no fur! Idiot.

Perhaps they should re-name it the “furbee”? It sold well. Has fur. And still has some cult status. Indeed, we came across one in the bedroom of a chilean child recently and I was tempted to put in an offer! You can buy one in the UK for a cool £6. But it doesn’t have moving ears and doesn’t charge you for something you don’t want. Oh, hang on…
