Some quick requests

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Hi all! We hope you are having a good Holy Week (semana santa) and that the Lent period has been a time of refreshment, reflection and preparation for the celebration of Easter and news of the living Lord Jesus.

We have lots to thank God for. In particular;

  • For providing a fulfilling and interesting job for Douglas, albeit requiring 7am starts and a lot of remote working.
  • We have been very grateful for time together, with Rachel in Santiago for 7 weeks. We have gained a (fairly) regular routine and have spent a good deal of time together.
  • For several weekend breaks outside of Santiago, enjoying the summer weather.
  • For good friends here in Santiago, to support, spend time with and learn from. In particular, for Carey, Naomi, Linde, Naomi (another one), Shana, Penelope and James, David and Anne, Christian, Blair, Colin and Maureen.
  • For God’s help in keeping our Lent commitments.
  • For helping Rachel to complete and submit an academic paper for publishing and for (relatively) minor edits required.
  • I guess your Easter weekends will be busy, but if you have a minute, we’d appreciate your prayers for the following:

  • Our friends Paul and Joyce are expecting a baby and, hilariously, they just skyped me to say that Joyce has had contractions for 3 hours now. Please pray for them as they have a child who will be chilean, british and american, in a chilean hospital! Pray that there would be no complications, in particular, that he/she might not have any sight problems (an inherited problem for their 1st son, Gabriel).
  • Second, please pray for Rachel who is at Paranal at the moment, working really hard. She is learning to use a new instrument, CryoRes, a high resolution infrared camera and enduring many problems with said camera!
  • Third, for our friend Naomi Irvine (see 3 day Huerquehue Hike pics below), who attemped the Santiago International Marathon last sunday but, sadly, retired at 24km with a hip/leg muscle injury which has disabled her for 3 days now. Pray for a rapid recovery of both movement and strength of her left leg.
  • For friends, Penelope and James, who require more english teaching and translation work here in Chile in order to live here sustainably. Pray for guidance for them and, if it is right for them to stay, more classes and more students.
  • Lastly, please pray as we organise the next meeting of our young persons group at the Church here, on the 14th April. We will study the bible character, David, God’s finest musicmaker, and will be rehearsing with the youth (who are very skilled players of oboes, pianos, violins and guitars….) to play at a service on the 22nd April.
  • Thanks!

    Prayer points

    Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Rather than publish a prayer letter, here are some points for prayer! We really value your prayers and we know that God listens and answers those prayers. Indeed, we have felt His protection and love surrounding us in a number of situations recently (see below). We have also received so many blessings, particularly during the time we have had with Doug’s parents.

    Things to be thankful for!

  • Safe flights for Doug’s Mum and Dad. They’re flight to Chile was particularly turbulent and slow, but they were relieved to reach Santiago and we enjoyed a joyful reunion!
  • For safe journeys in Chile, including “Divine timing” when we got a puncture at 2500m close to the border of Argentina! We changed the wheel on the Landie for the first time (they weigh in at a cool 70kg each) in just 38 minutes! 2 minutes later, the rain started and did not stop for another 10 hours!
  • For wonderful weather! We had 2 days of rain in 13 days travelling in the south. More news and photos to follow online.
  • For God’s grace and mercy to us in our first year of marriage. Thanks to all of you who wrote to us for our 1st Wedding Anniversary on the 5th November! It has been a challenging, testing year but we can reflect on the experiences of finding and making a home with delight and gratitude to God and to friends here.
  • For patience and understanding during 2 weeks of travel with Doug’s parents! It was not always easy but God longs to see families and fellow Christians living in harmony, despite different experiences, attitudes and opinions.
  • For our friends here in Chile, especially those we’ve made through ESO, Rachel’s work, and through the Church here. As we prepare to return to the UK for Christmas, we hope to establish these friendships and build them, as a source of encouragement, support and joy.
  • Some prayer concerns:

  • Both of our Grandmothers have been suffering from pain or weakness recently, Quick Granny (Rachel’s) has had a very painful neck, while Doug’s has experienced shaky/weak days. Pray for continued health and endurance and that they would remain joyful in the promise of eternal life.
  • For both Rachel and Doug’s dad as they return to work after 3 weeks of holiday.
  • For Rachel as she goes to Paranal for 8 days. That she will continue to learn and that her supervisor would show understanding and humility.
  • For Douglas as he considers employment options for the post-Christmas period. Pray that he would remain motivated as he helps with a charity working with the mentally and physically disabled. Also that he would not be resentful and angry with the lack of contact/communication demonstrated by Chilean employers (he recently received only his third reply to a job application, some 8 months after applying!).
  • That we would continue to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God here in Chile- a tall order sometimes!
  • Congratulations due about now…

To Michael and Veronica Hantke-Torres, who are expecting a baby this week!

Hope all goes well! We’ll be thinking of you both in our prayers!

Congratulations to our friends Joel and Ophelia Arajo-Fox who recently had a baby, Fabio Kai.
    Joel, Ophelia and Fabio-Kai

However, two weeks after the C-section, Ophelia has returned to hospital with an infection (presumed to be the wound). It has become quite serious and she remains in intensive care, requiring some form of blood transfusions.

Please pray for them both, for comfort for Ophelia, that the antibiotics would work and that baby Fabio would be at peace while staying with his grandparents. I’ll provide an update as a comment when we hear more news.
