Its been a while…

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Hey! Thanks for all your comments. Thought I’d kickstart blogging again with a few short ones.

Rachel has been to Santiago and has left me again… to Paranal. This time for 9 days. I’ve started an intensive spanish course which has been really challenging so far- the homework takes an hour and the course starts at 8.30am every weekday morning. Those who know me well will know that getting up is a problem for me!

Anyway, things falling together here in Santiago. Our dining table and chairs arrived on monday! Yeh! We enjoyed eating indoors for the first time in 2 months (although there wasn’t really a need… it still hasn’t rained here since we arrived). We’ve had fun planting up a piece of wood we carried back from the South of Chile (with plants.. not just sticking in the ground!). And i’ve finished painting the office, the lounge and the hall.

We’re looking forward to our next guests in April- Rachel’s sister and partner, Chris. Don’t know how knackered/broke/fed-up speaking spanish they will be on arrival but really looking forward to it!

Anyway, our broadband phone mysteriously died the other day… as did our fridge (again). So after much huffing and puffing and general stress yesterday… or rather, a complete defrost and a re-installation of phone software, its all working again today!

Better go do homework now. Its like being back at school…. only in another language!

Estuvan estado robado!

I’m really angry this evening. For the second time in as many months, I’ve heard these words and it makes me walk around ready to punch someone.

Some opinions shared by a friend “that you cannot trust anyone in Chile, except, perhaps your own gringo friends” is slowly and sadly being proven. In addition to our bikes being stolen last month, soon after their arrival in Chile, our monthly charges for the upkeep of the building, payment of concierge and insurance has, apparently, been stolen by one of the concierge staff.

It has emerged that since he left just 10 days ago, he has “walked” with more than £500 of charges. In that sense, “it could have been worse”- he only stole £60 of our payments. But it’s not clear if there is any form of insurance or recompense for this.

It is very hard to want to trust anyone here. We really did believe that the concierge concerned, Eugenio Pavez (incase he checks on Google!), was friendly, honest, trustworthy and fun. We shared time good and bad times with him. I would forgive and welcome him back because he did his job really well. But I don’t think the other residents will share my views! And even then, the system (in its current form) doesn’t allow more secure payments.

Web-bugs!

Thursday, March 2nd, 2006

This morning, I discovered that a bug has been working at our website….and changed some of the links on the side-bar so they direct you to porn-sites or gambling sites. Ironically, only links under “useful stuff” seem to have been affected! Cause for concern, given how much security stuff is built into Wordpress, the program used to develop this site.

If you notice anything on our website when using links or when viewing pages, please get in contact with me immediately through email. Thanks.
